Johan Santana has been trying to come back from a shoulder injury since 2010. Yesterday he took a giant step in the right direction.
In a preseason game against the Cardinals, Santana pitched two scoreless innings. He didn’t have any strikeouts, but only gave up one hit. Not a bad first day back. More then that, in a mess that is the Met’s this year, he could be the one shining thing they can use to keep the team relevant (albeit not contenders).
What about your fantasy team? Santana will never be one of the top guys again. But, if he is healthy, he can be a solid starter in even mixed leagues. He should be able to get a good amount of Ks and keep his ERA in check. The biggest problem with Santana (besides health) is the fact that he plays for the Mets. The Mets look awful this year. Maybe they will surprise, but likely, they will struggle for wins.
The way outside shot: What if Santana approaches his old self? Could this late rounder be a fantasy stud? It could happen. Not likely, but not out of the question.
Worst case is you get a solid pitcher with a pretty good upside who may not last all year.
