Prospect Watch: Matt Harvey

Matt Harvey

I have to admit, my favorite thing about Matt Harvey is the name, ‘Harvey’. All I can think of is Jimmy Stewart (the BEST) and his invisible rabbit. Anyway, The Met’s are calling up one of their top pitching prospects for Thursday’s game.

Zach Wheeler is the Met’s best pitching prospect, but he is still a year or two away.  Harvey, however, is ready and very good.

In the minors this year, Harvey has a nice 3.68 ERA, with 112 Ks in 110 innings.  Last year, he had a 3.32 with 156 Ks in 135 innings.  More then a K an innings is great.  Although 3.32 is a nice ERA, I would like to see a little bit lower in the minors.

Harvey has the potential to make an immediate impact.  He has a mid 90’s fastball to go with good breaking stuff.  But we need to see how he does at the major league level.  Citi Field is more of a pitchers park then a hitters park and the Mets have a decent, if not scrappy team.

For fantasy, he is completely worth the roster spot in deep leagues.  Medium leagues should probably wait and see.  Unless Harvey dominates, he likely won’t be relevant until next year at least.
