2012 Spring Training Report
Starling Marte- OF- Pirates
The 23-year-old prospect is off to a great start smacking 9 hits with his first 13 at bats (.692 average) including two home runs. The question is, will he make the team?
Sterling Marte is five-tool player that has shown he is ready for the big leagues. In 2011 Marte won the league’s batting title when he hit .332 with 12 home runs, 50 RBI and 24 stolen bases for the Pirates’ Double-A affiliate.
The problem is that the Pirates have a young outfield that includes Andrew McCutchen, Alex Presley and Jose Tabata (not to mention Nate McLouth). It is very likely that Marte will start the season down in AAA Indianapolis, though the way he is hitting, it may be hard for the Pirates to do that.
Marte has being the subject of trade talks, so stay tuned to see where he ends up, because he is looking more and more like a draft day sleeper.
