Remember Brian Roberts? Stud 2B for the Baltimore Orioles? Well, he’s returned.
After suffering a concussion, Roberts has been dealing with the effects of that for the last two years. He played 59 games in 2010 and only 39 in 2011 (not very effectively). But now, over a year since playing in a big league game, Roberts started yesterday. It was a great return, going 3 for 4 with an RBI.
Historically, Roberts has been great. He hits in the .280-.290 range, can steal bases with the best of them, scores runs in bunches, and has a little pop.
What can we expect from the 34 year old for the remainder of this year? Well, I’m banking on him doing well. I see him hitting in the .270 range, 20+ SBs (even at 34), close to 10 HRs, and a bunch of runs (65+). This is speculation, but Roberts always has impressed me, and he clearly wants to play – no one waits out a year without still having some fire.
2B has not been a deep position for awhile, so Roberts can be a very nice mid-season pickup. Absolutely worth owning in deep leagues, worthy risk in medium leagues, and potentially a shallow league contributor – although I would wait in a shallow league to make sure Roberts is back to his old self.
