All signs point to Joakim Soria being done for the year – Tommy John. This opens the door for someone to take over the closer role.
KC has two options for the job. First, they have a very experienced closer in Jonathan Broxton. Broxton had some outstanding years with the Dodgers, but ended his tenure there with many poor outings. His ERA in 2009 was 2.61 but ballooned to 4.04 in 2010, and then went even higher, 5.68 last year (only 14 games). Maybe this can be explained by an elbow injury (for which he had surgery for) or maybe he just doesn’t have ‘it’ anymore.
KC’s other option is Greg Holland. Holland was outstanding last year as a setup man. He had an ERA of 1.80, 0.93 WHIP, and K’d more then a batter an inning (74 in 60). His second half call up last year proved to be a brilliant move for the club. Even before the injury to Soria, it was talked about Holland potentially closing.
KC has a tough decision to make. Do they go with the experienced guy and hope he is back to his 2009 self? Or do they go with the less experienced guy who has been exceptionally good. As much as I like Broxton (I’m a Dodger fan), I’m scared to have him as my closer. My vote is for Holland. (Please KC do NOT do a closer by committee) To make it more confusing, both guys have looked good in spring training.
KC looks really good this year, so there should be a lot of save chances. Watch this competition closely as the winner has the potential to be a top closer.
