The Cubs, in need of just about everything, called up their top hitting prospect 1B Anthony Rizzo.
In 3 games at the big league level this year, Rizzo has done alright. He has gone 3 for 11 (.273) with 1 RBI. All this shows is that he isn’t being overwhelmed by major league pitching like he was in his last call up (2011 for San Diego) – where he batted .141.
Why are the Cubs so hot on this guy? Because his minor league numbers are great. This year, he batted .342 with 23 HRs – very nice. In 2011, he batted .331 with 26 HRs. So the Cubs have a player that can hit for average and power – every team would like that.
So what should we do with young Rizzo in fantasy? His youth makes him too risky for shallow leagues – best to watch and wait. In medium leagues, you may want to gamble, but there are several good 1Bs out there, so Rizzo may not be the best option. Deep leagues (and keeper leagues) should definitely give him a chance. He has good potential, it is just a question of when he will reach it.
