The Detroit Tigers are a force to recon with. I knew they would be good, but they ‘put it together’ faster then I thought they would. With an offense like that, their pitchers should be in line for many wins – even their #5 guy who is not owned yet in most fantasy leagues.
The Tiger’s #5 guy is Drew Smyly. After 2 starts there is something to pay attention to. Smyly’s first start was nothing special – he only went 4 innings (90 pitches), 4 Ks, 4BB, and 1 ER. He also had a lot of fly balls, a little unnerving. However, in his second start, he was very good. He went 6 innings, 4 Ks, 1 BB, 0 ER (1 unearned run), and got the win. In this start, he kept the ball on the ground which calms the worries about his previous start.
So what’s next for this 22 year old lefty? Hard to tell. Clearly the Tigers thought him good enough to send Jacob Turner back to the minors. But after two starts, Smyly has not been over-matched at this level.
In fantasy, he is not ready for shallow leagues. But his win potential alone can make him viable in deep leagues, and if he keeps his numbers under control, he could even be valuable in medium leagues.
