Oakland has had issues with their closers this year, but it looks like they have finally settled on one – Ryan Cook.
Not only does he have 3 saves this week, his manager has given him the ‘official’ nod as the 9th inning guy.
On the year, Cook has a tiny ERA of 0.61, a 0.84 WHIP, along with 31 Ks in 29 innings. His only downside seems to be his walks – he has 16. However, he hasn’t been bothered by the free passes as he has minimized the effect of them. He is also showing signs of improving as he has only walked one in his last 5 starts.
For fantasy, I view Cook as an average closer. He’s not a headline guy (such as a Rivera or Papelbon), but an average/effective closer is valuable in most every league. So if you need a closer, regardless of league size, Cook is worth a spot.
