A.J. is Better Then OK

aj burnett

A.J. Burnett started his first game of the season and it was great.

Burnett’s first start was delayed by a broken face (I smile every time I say that) suffered by a foul tip during bunting practice.  But with that behind him, Burnett shut down the defending world champion Cardinals.  He went 7 innings, 7 Ks, 2 BB, and only 3 hits.  Could this be a sign of things to come?

Burnett to the Yankees ended up being a bad move.  Yea, he helped them to a 2009 world series win, but he probably hurt more then help in the following years.  His stuff is good (even great at times) but it sure seemed like the pressure of paying in New York was too much.  Leaving New York and going to a small market, and leaving the toughest hitting division and going to the NL is probably a brilliant move for Burnett.

I think Burnett is in for a very good year.  He has something to prove, and has the talent to prove it.  The Pirates are a good young team with limited expectations – perfect for A.J.

A.J. is close to being owned in shallow leagues – I like him that much.  With excellent strikeout potential and a ‘new’ start, I think A.J. can easily be owned in deep to medium leagues.  He’s hardly owned right now, but I predict that that will change soon.
