Closer Status Report
|
American
League East |
Baltimore
Orioles: No
closer named - Will Ohman (L)
Job Security: 0.0
Performance: 0.0
Backup - David Hernandez,
(Alfredo Simon, Koji Uehara, Mike
Gonzales (L) on DL)
Notes: Simon came out of
nowhere to get the job and was looking great
until he pulled his left hamstring and went
to the DL. Will Ohman, a lefty, is rumored
to have a crack at the job, but maybe only
in situations that are right for him. The
veteran Japanese pitcher Koji Uehara has pitched
well, but he to is on the DL. A committee
lead by rookie Frank Mata or former starter
David Hernandez is likley. Mike Gonzales will
be on the DL about another month with a strained
left shoulder. Reports |

Boston
Red Sox: Jonathan
Papelbon
Job Security: 10.0
Performance: 9.0 Backup
- Daniel Bard, Hideki Okajima, Ramon Ramirez
Notes: He is one of
the best closers in baseball period and his
job is very safe. He did blow his first save
in 10 chances, but is still among the best.
Okajima, the usual second in line, is struggling
while young gun Daniel Bard is the new #2
a could be a great closer for somebody in
the future, but has no experience. Ramon Ramirez
does have 1 save. Could be a committee if
Papelbon goes down. Reports

New
York Yankees:
Mariano Rivera
Job Security: 9.0
Performance: 10.0 Backup
- Joba Chamberlain, Damaso Marte (L)
Notes: The only issue here
is Rivera's age and health. He is still a
great closer, but he will miss games. Joba
Chamberlain is the #2 here and should be owned
if you own Rivera. Damaso Marte is a left-handed
save option. Reports

|
Tampa
Bay Rays: Rafael
Soriano
Job Security: 9.5
Performance: 9.5 Backup
- Grant Balfour , Dan Wheeler Notes:
Soriano has been great and he has two pitchers
with closing experience behind him, though
Balfour is the likely #2 here. Reports |
|
|
Toronto
Blue Jays:
Kevin Gregg
Job Security: 8.5
Performance: 9.5 Backup
- Scott Downs (L), Jason Frasor
Notes: Gregg has surprised
most by nailing 10 of 11 saves and he has
secured the job. Frasor hasn't pitched well
at all while veteran Scott Downs has experience,
is pitching solid and is a better pick for
#2. Reports |

American
League Central |
Chicago
White Sox: Bobby
Jenks
Job Security: 6.5
Performance: 6.0
Backup - Matt Thornton
(L), J.J. Putz
Notes: Jenks has been solid
(4 consecutive saves) after nearly losing
his job. but Matt Thornton may still be used
from time-to-time. Former stud-closer J.J.
Putz is pitching well, but he is injury prone
and may no longer have stamina to be a closer.
Nevertheless, Putz is in the mix. Reports |
|
|
Cleveland
Indians: Kerry
Wood On Watch!
Job Security: 5.0
Performance: 5.0 Backup
- Chris Perez, Jensen Lewis
Notes: Wood allowed five
runs and thusly blew his first save opportunity
since his return from the DL, but has settled
in and pitched better. Chris Perez is the
better pitcher here and just may get his job
back sooner than later. Reports |
|
|
Detroit
Tigers: Jose
Valverde
Job Security: 9.5
Performance: 10.0 Backup
- Joel Zumaya , Ryan Perry Notes:
Valverde has been brilliant thus
far for the Tigers while both Zumaya and Perry
have looked good as well. Perry has one save,
but if Zumaya remains healthy and keeps pitching
well, he may be number two. Reports
|
|
|
Minnesota
Twins: Jon
Rauch
Job Security: 8.5
Performance: 9.0 Backup
- Matt Guerrier, Jesse Crain Notes:
Rauch has been excellent replacing
Joe Nathan and the job is 100%. Veteran Matt
Guerrier has pitched well and though a committee
approach is likely if Rauch went down, he
is number two while Jesse Crain is probably
number three. Reports

|
|
Kansas
City Royals:
Joakim Soria
Job Security: 9.0
Performance: 8.0 Backup
- Kyle Farnsworth, Dusty Hughes (L)
Notes: Soria has not been
as dominating this year, but has 10 of 12
saves and there is no threat to his job. Farnsworth
has some closing experience and is the likely
number two and should do a solid job if Soria
goes down to injury. Reports |

American
League West |
Los Angeles
Angels: Brian Fuentes
(L) On Watch!
Job Security: 7.5
Performance: 5.5 Backup
- Fernando Rodney, Kevin Jepsen Notes:
Fuentes has had a sloppy start to say
the least, but Fuentes had a slow start in 2009
and ended up saving a major-league-leading 48 games.
Rodney is a very good closer and could take over
if Fuentes continues to falter. Jepsen has not pitched
well and has no value for now. Reports |
|
|
Oakland
Athletics: Andrew
Bailey
Job Security: 8.5
Performance: 8.5 Backup
- Brad Ziegler, Michael Wuertz
Notes: Bailey has been very good
thus far, yet only has 6 of 8 saves (1.15 ERA).
There is no threat to his job, but Ziegler is pitching
well has has closing experience and that gives him
some value.

|
|
Seattle
Mariners: David
Aardsma
Job Security: 8.5
Performance: 8.0
Backup - Brandon League, Shawn
Kelley
Notes: Aardsma has had a so-so
start in 2010, but has pitched good enough. Brandon
League is the likely number two, though a committee
is very possible.
Reports |
|
|
Texas Rangers:
Neftali Feliz
Job Security: 8.5
Performance: 8.5 Backup -
Frank Francisco, Chris Ray Notes:
Feliz was a bit shaky at first, but has been very
good since. He has a ton of talent and that should
secure the job for him unless he really implodes.
Former closers Francisco and Ray give the Rangers
great depth, but Francisco is the clear number two
has has solid value. Reports |
