| Gordon Beckham - Chicago
White Sox - The 8th-overall-pick of the 2008 draft
spent a short time in the minors finishing with a .322
batting average and hit seven home runs with 233 at bats.
He got the call-up midway through the season and he batted
.270, popped 14 home runs, 28 doubles and stole 7 bases
with 374 at bats. The average should come up in 2010 and
with a recharged White Sox lineup Beckham could be inline
for a big season that includes over 20 home runs and 100
RBI's. |

| Matt Wieters - Baltimore
Orioles - Sometimes the
names are obvious as is the case for Matt Wieters. He
batted .343 and hit 32 home runs with 578 at bats in his
short minor league career and there is no doubt that he
has the ability to be a .300, 25 home-run-hitting catcher
in the big leagues, which is extremely rare, but it may
take a couple years of development before he reaches those
lofty goals. Until then he will still be a top-five fantasy
catcher and is the last sure-thing catcher on the list
with potential to be a stud. The Orioles have been completely
overhauled and there offense is looking pretty strong
and that will give a young hitter like Wieters the confidence,
the pitches and the opportunities to become a great fantasy
catcher. |

| Miguel Montero - Arizona
Diamondbacks - We have seen several young catchers
regress in their second full seasons, so buyer beware.
With that said, you have to love Montero's potential as
a fantasy catcher. He batted .291 with 16 home runs and
30 doubles with 425 at bats in 2009. His power is not
a fluke either. He hit ten in 2007 with just 184 at bats
and smashed 62 in the minors with 1669 career at bats
(.291 career average). A potential 20 home runs, .300
hitting catcher is to good not to take a chance on. There
is word that he is being tried at first base to get him
more playing time. |

Chris Davis - Texas
Rangers - He was a first-half fantasy bust (to
the point of being demoted to the minors) in 2009, but
finished the season strong and ended up with a .238 average
and 21 home runs with his 391 at bats. Davis strikeouts
way too much and isn't much of a hitter yet, but unlike
Adam Dunn and Carlos Pena, who have the same issue, at
24, Davis has time and potential to improve. He showed
this at the the end of the 2009 season batting .308 with
six home runs with 138 at bats. Maybe the best news of
all, he struck out at a lower rate. |
1B |
| Chris Iannetta - Colorado
Rockies - After starring for Team USA in the World
Baseball Classic and a standout 2008 season where he smashed
18 home runs with just 333 at bats and a .264 batting
average, big things were expected from Chris Iannetta
in 2009. Instead he batted a mere .228 and lost his everyday
job and finished with just 289 at bats and 16 home runs.
To make things worse the Rockies signed veteran catcher
Miguel Olivo in the off season. Olivo just came off a
career-high 23 home runs, and that was in Kansas City.
He was likely brought in to push Iannetta and to give
the Rockies insurance rather than to start him. In fact,
to show their confidence in Iannetta's future the Rockies
gave him a three-year, $8.35 million contract extension.
With his power potential he is still worth a look, especially
playing in Colorado. |
C |
| Howie Kendrick - Los
Angeles Angels - He really came into his own in
the second half of 2009 when he batted .358 with six home
runs and four stolen bases with just 165 at bats. He finished
2009 with 10 home runs, 11 stolen bases and a .291 batting
average with 374 at bats. If you miss out at a top second
basemen, Hendrick could be good for a .300, 15 home run,
15 stolen base season if he gets the chance to be the
full-time second basemen and remains healthy. |

Drew Stubbs -
Cincinnati Reds - What a
great start to a major league career for Stubbs who
bated .267, hit eight home runs and stolen 10 bases
with 180 at bats. He has 20 home run, 40 stolen base
potential, though in 2009 AAA Louisville he only had
four home runs and 46 stolen bases. The power numbers
are a bit in-question, but playing in the Great American
Ball Park seems to help everyone's power numbers. |
CF |
Nolan Reimold
- Baltimore Orioles -
He was on his way to a great rookie season before
he he hit the DL with tendinitis in his left Achilles'
tendon. Reimold still finished with 15 home runs and
8 stolen bases with 358 at bats. The improved Oriole
offense should help a healthy Reimold reach 25 to
30 home runs, 15 stolen bases and a .290 batting average. |
LF |
Julio Borbón
- Texas Rangers - Seeing
his 2009 stats for the short time he played will make
you drool (.312, four home runs, 19 stolen bases with
157 at bats), but there are big questions namely will
he start? It is a crowded outfield, but if he continues
to play like he did in 2009, he will start somewhere.
