2010 Fantasy Baseball Sleeper Report

Outfield
Breakouts |
Player |
Pos |
Seth Smith
- Colorado Rockies - He hit
.293 with 15 home runs, 55 RBI's and 61 runs with
335 at bats. He was a career .313 hitter in the minors
and showed nice power and enough speed to get you
good numbers in doubles, triples and maybe 10 to 15
stolen bases. |
LF |
| Travis Snider - Toronto
Blue Jays - He struggled in the Big's in 2009 batting
just .241 with 9 home runs with 241 at bats, but the big-time
prospect batted .337 with 14 home runs in AAA Las Vegas.
He has power to all fields and a strong arm which will
help him fight for the right field spot against José
Bautista. Snider had some injury issues and that partly
accounted for his tough time with the Blue Jays, but at
just 22 years of age Snider just needs experience and
we should see him improve a ton in 2010. |
LF |
| Matt LaPorta - Cleveland
Indians - The big prospect finally got the call,
but did not pay big dividends, but he batted a respectable
.254 with 7 home runs with 181 at bats. He batted .299
with 17 home runs in 2009 AAA Columbus before his call-up.
LaPorta is a big-time talent and is destined to be a .300,
25-30 home-run-hitter. |
LF |
| Kyle Blanks - San
Diego Padres - He is 6-6,
280 pounds of home-run-hitting flesh. He smashed 73 home
runs with his 1662 career minor league at bats (he batted
.304) and smashed ten more with just 148 at bats at the
end of the 2009 season. That would put him on pace for
over 40 home runs in a full season. That is a bit lofty,
but that is the kind of hitter Kyle Banks potentially
is. |
RF |
| Rajai Davis - Oakland
A's - He finally found a full-time spot in Oakland
and batted .325 with 24 doubles, 4 triples and 30 stolen
bases with 277 at bats in the second-half of the 2009
season. If you double those numbers, you have a poor man's
Jacoby Ellsbury at the bottom of the draft. |
CF |
| Carlos Gómez - Milwaukee
Brewers - The 24-year-old has bombed so far as
a fantasy prospect, but there is nothing like a move to
give new life to a prospect. He is a lot like Denard Span
in that he can score points across the board. He hit 7
home runs, 7 triples, 24 doubles and stole 33 bases in
2008 for the Twins, but unlike Span, he is not much of
a hitter. He is a career .246 hitter, so you are betting
on him improving that in 2010. Playing in Milwaukee should
help his stats and combine that with his youth and you
have a worthwhile breakout candidate. |

Pos |
| Clayton Kershaw - Los
Angeles Dodgers - He is just turning 22, so there
could be bumps in the road, but Kershaw is a future fantasy-stud.
Whether it is going to be 2012, 2011 or 2010, time will
tell, but he will be better than his likely draft-position
and is all but guaranteed to improve upon his 2009 8 and
record. He should be good for 14-16 wins, 2.80 or better
ERA and over a K an inning. |
SP |
| J.A. Happ - Philadelphia
Phillies - Has been excellent from day one, but
sometimes that is scarier in a young pitcher because they
are bound to hit a bump in the road and regress. Nevertheless
Happ could be that good and that makes him an easy breakout
candidate. The 6-6 lefty went 12-4 with a 2.93 ERA and
119 K's in 166 innings and that is hard to shy away from,
especially playing for a winning team. |
SP |
| Brandon Morrow - Toronto
Blue Jays - He was acquired in the Cliff Lee, Roy
Halladay trade, so Toronto is expecting big things from
the 25-year-old. He was supposed to have his breakout
season in 2009, but injuries. He finished the season strong
going 2-0 with a 2.66 ERA towards the end of the season,
including an 8 inning, 9 K, 0 run performance to finish
the season. |
RP/SP |
| Neftali Feliz -
Texas Rangers - The phenom is just too good not
to draft somewhere. He looked untouchable as a rookie
coming out of the bullpen. Will he start ? Will he close?
Probably neither to start the season, but maybe both by
the end. Either way, he should have a big future in fantasy
baseball. He went 1-0 with 2 saves and a 1.74 ERA with
39 strikeouts in 31 innings. |
SP |
| Phil Hughes - New
York Yankees - The 24-year-old went 8-3 with a
3.03 ERA and 96 K's in 86 innings pitching for the best
team in baseball. Unfortunately it was mostly in the bullpen.
He will fight for the 5th spot in the rotation and if
he gets it, he could be good. If not he could be Rivera's
back-up and that has value as well. |
SP |
| Robinson Tejeda -
Kansas City Royals - He has been allover the place
over the last few years between the minors and majors
and three different teams, but he finally came into his
own at the end of the 2009 season. He finished as a starter
and went 3-1 with 32 strikeouts in 31.2 innings. Drafting
a Royal is always a risk, but Tejada is one to keep an
eye on and may be worth drafting in larger leagues. |
RP/SP |
| Chris Tillman -
Baltimore Orioles - The Orioles are waiting for
their prized prospect who was acquired in the Bedard trade
to come through and 2010 may be the year. He didn't impress
as a rookie in '09 going 2-5 with a 5.40 era and a lousy
5.4 K/9-ratio, but he posted a 10.49 K/9-ratio in '09
AA. He has a fastball that runs up to 94 mph, an above-average
curve and a decent change-up. If he can put it all together,
the improved Oriole offense will help get him the wins
needed to be a good fantasy pitcher. |
