Sleeper Report: Rookies
Drew Pomeranz – SP – Colorado
Okay, he’s not a true rookie in that he started some games last year (4 to be exact) but I’m not calling him anything else – except maybe ‘Pom Pom’. Not because he’s a cheerleader or cheerleading paraphernalia, because Pomeranz makes me think of Pomeranian which is nicknamed ‘Pom Pom.’ I digress…
In his 4 MLB starts, Pom Pom was not great with a 5.40 ERA. Small sampling though. His minor league career shows why the Rockies were willing to trade Jimenez for him. In 20 games in 2011 he had an ERA of 1.78 and struck out 119 in 101 innings. Outstanding!
So far this spring this lefty has pitched 5 innings total (a 2 inning outing and a 3 inning outing)
has not given up a run and has struck out 5. Looking good.
Although Pom Pom is ‘fighting for a starting job’ it is assumed he will get one. A young prospect with a starting job on a decent team in a weak division – all the makings of a good sleeper. Look for him in mid to late rounds.
